How After-Hours Admin Affects Tradies’ Health | Tradify™

Written by Team Tradify | Aug 25, 2026, 2:03:23 AM

For many trade business owners, knocking off doesn’t always mean switching off. When work moves from the job site to the kitchen table, the mix of physical work and after-hours admin can take a toll on sleep, recovery and wellbeing, which Tradies National Health Month aims to bring into the spotlight across Australia and New Zealand.

1. Why Tradies National Health Month exists

Launched by the Australian Physiotherapy Association in 2012, Tradies National Health Month highlights the physical and mental health challenges facing tradies across Australia and New Zealand.

The APA’s 2026 survey found that 74% of tradies regularly experience work-related pain or discomfort, while more than half aren’t confident they can remain in their trade until retirement. Its 2024 survey also found that 87% medicate or self-medicate to manage pain, including 30% who turn to drugs or alcohol.

The mental health toll is equally serious. Construction workers in Australia are six times more likely to die by suicide than in a workplace accident, with approximately 190 lives lost each year, according to MATES Australia. In New Zealand, construction has the highest proportion of suicides of any industry, losing more than one worker every week—99% of them men, MATES in Construction NZ reports.

2. The learning curve

Tradify is a job management platform, not a mental health service, and we’re not suggesting better admin software can solve a mental health crisis. The organisations and services listed below are far better placed to provide support.

What we can speak to is the reality of going out on your own. Many tradies start a business because they’re great at their trade, not because they love paperwork. But becoming self-employed also means suddenly taking on quoting, invoicing, scheduling, compliance, customer management and chasing payments.

"Before Tradify, I didn't realise how much time would go into everything outside the trade itself. I got into the industry because I love working with my hands, staying active and seeing the result of a hard day's work. But once I became self-employed, I found there was a mountain of paperwork waiting for me as well." — Daniel Lukic, Luxic Service

That pressure is being felt across Australia and New Zealand. Rising living, material and labour costs, combined with unpredictable workloads, can make it difficult to plan ahead and stay on top of the business.

Unlike larger organisations, small trade businesses may not have access to HR teams or occupational health services. For someone running a business alone, this can make it harder to seek advice, take time off or put a structured wellbeing plan in place.

3. Where Tradify hopes to help

Tradify is a job management platform, not a mental health service. Better software can’t solve the wider health challenges facing the industry, and the organisations listed below are far better placed to provide professional support.

Tradify’s role is more practical: helping trade business owners manage the administrative side of running their businesses.

By bringing enquiries, quotes, jobs, scheduling, customer information and invoicing into one place, Tradify aims to reduce the time spent searching through paperwork, duplicating information and trying to remember what still needs to be done.

“Tradify brought everything together in one place. I could manage jobs, prepare quotes and send invoices from my phone while the details were still fresh. I still have busy days, but I have a much clearer boundary between work and family time now. Being able to properly switch off has made a big difference.”
— Daniel Lukic, Luxic Service

There will always be administration involved in running a business. Tradify hopes to make that work simpler and more manageable, giving trade business owners greater visibility and control over their day.

4. Protect your time

Protecting your time isn’t just about finishing earlier. Creating a clearer boundary between work and home can give you more opportunity to rest, recover and focus on life outside the business.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire business overnight. A few practical changes can help prevent admin from routinely following you home:

  • Invoice before leaving the job. Create and send the invoice while the details are still fresh. With Tradify, you can do it from your phone instead of waiting until you get home.
  • Use templates for regular work. Set up reusable quote and invoice templates so you don’t have to start from scratch each time.
  • Build admin into the working day. Set aside regular time for quotes, invoices and follow-ups. Treat it like a booked job, rather than something you’ll get to after hours.
  • Set a realistic finishing time. Decide when your normal working day ends and communicate that boundary to your team and customers. There will always be exceptions, but a clear default makes it easier to protect your evenings.
  • Turn off non-essential notifications. Unless you provide an emergency service, consider muting work notifications after your finishing time. You can still check anything urgent without allowing every message to pull you back into work.
  • Review recurring admin. If the same task repeatedly follows you home, consider whether it could be simplified, automated or delegated.

The aim isn’t to create a perfectly rigid schedule. It’s to make after-hours work the exception rather than the default, leaving more room for sleep, recovery, relationships and the activities that help you switch off.

5. Where to get support

Tradify's role is to help with the admin side of the equation. But if you or someone you know is struggling, there are dedicated services built specifically for the trades — no referral, no paperwork, no judgment.

6. Looking after yourself is part of running the business

Tradies National Health Month is a reminder that looking after yourself isn't limited to avoiding injuries on the worksite. It also means making room for sleep, recovery, relationships and life outside the business.

There will always be some admin involved in running a trade business. The goal isn't to eliminate it completely, it's to have the right systems and boundaries in place so work doesn't take over every evening and weekend.

If you're struggling, please reach out to one of the services listed above. And if you're ready to get your admin under control, Tradify brings your enquiries, quotes, jobs, scheduling and invoicing together in one place — helping you stay on top of business while you're still out and about.
